S.W.O.R.D.S Rd1 Race Report. Excellent weekend for Go Engines
26 April 2010
The south west's S.W.O.R.D.S series got underway this past weekend at the excellent Tiverton Track. The changeable weather proved to make tyre choice tough throughout the day with light showers damping the track at some point in nearly every round. During qualifying Matthew Varah set out his championship intentions capturing TQ with his Novarossi powered Mugen, followed by Mark Parnell and Ben Jordan. This year TQ is based on the best two of four qualifying results and this has received a rather "marmite" reception amongst the racers with consistency now being the focus. I guess the biggest loser of the new system was Rod Mingo who whilst attaining the fastest single round time found himself in fourth place overall.
In the C final runaway winner Paul Broom looked happy to make the bump up, Mike Evans coming second securing his place in the B final.
Lee Bennetts drove his GoTech powered Mugen to a convincing win in the B final confirming trouble through the heats had him miss placed. Dave Stanley driving a GoTech powered Losi took a great 2nd to take the last A final placing. John Andrews with his caster powered Losi coming in 3rd.
With the A final starting after a short shower again tyre choice in the air. I believe most people opted safe and choose Spirals. On a tricky surface Matthew Varah lead the field from Ben Jordan, Mark Parnell and Rod Mingo in fourth. Mark Parnell soon proved to fast in these conditions though moving to the front of the field by lap eight never to look back eventually taking a convincing round one win. Ben Jordan hit trouble on lap ten falling to sixth, but would recover later in the race to fourth.
Final results were:
Driver Motor Buggy Tyre
1st, Mark Parnell, Ninja, Mugen Mbx6, Schumacher Spiral
2nd, Matthew Varah, NovaRossi, Mugen Mbx6, Schumacher Spiral
3rd, Rod Mingo, GoTech, Mugen Mbx6, Schumacher Spiral
After the meeting there was a short presentation where the Optifuel prizes for the days racing was awarded. On this occasion prizes went to the winner of each Final with Mark Parnell and Lee Bennetts each receiving a 2.5l bottle of their excellent 30% fuel and Paul Broom receiving the Optifuel Mug for his C final win.
